Today, the Town of Bassendean welcomed the community to join in a celebratory event to recognise women’s achievements throughout history.
Councillors Kath Hamilton, Hilary MacWilliam and Sarah Quinton joined Mayor Renee McLennan, Chief Executive Officer Peta Mabbs along with Town staff, community leaders, local school students and residents to hear from special guest Professor Lyn Beazley.
Cr McLennan opened the event with an address (attached) which recognised local women leaders who paved the way. The Mayor commented “we have many amazing women in our community who continue this work today. Serena Williams reminded us that: Every woman's success should be an inspiration to another. We're strongest when we cheer each other on.
That’s part of what today is about – taking the time to celebrate the achievements of all the amazing women like these who have so positively shaped our community. Building on the gains they’ve made towards a gender equal world is essential for our communities to thrive both locally here in Bassendean, and globally around the world. But it requires collective action and shared responsibility; every one of us has a role to play in creating a more gender-balanced world.”
Professor Beazley then shared her leadership journey with a very engaged audience. After graduating from Oxford and Edinburgh universities, Lyn dedicated more than 30 years to the field of neuroscience, researching recovery from brain damage and changing clinical practice in the treatment of infants at risk from pre-term delivery. As Chief Scientist of Western Australia from 2006 to 2013, Lyn advised the state government on science, innovation and technology, as well as fulfilling the role of science ambassador both in Australia and internationally. Lyn has been determined to demonstrate that science is not just a theoretical exercise, but a practical one too. She helped set up a nationwide ‘hotline’ for laboratory technicians in schools and worked for healthier waterways across the state by establishing Dolphin Watch. Her goal is for every Australian child to learn and love science.
In conclusion, Lyn encouraged as a community we support women’s ongoing development through mentoring and leadership programs; support and promote the education of our young people; and promote financial literacy amongst women.
As part of the event, the community was asked what their vision was for a gender equal future is. Responses included:
For senior women to be encouraged to stay in the workforce. Be kind. Treat people as you would like to be treated. Support (socially, economically, environmentally etc.) each other as women and girls to realise our potential and take up equal status in this world. A greater emphasis on encouraging the sciences and mathematics for girls starting in Primary School, particularly in co-ed schools. Power, support and love to create a community that encourages co-operation, joy and peace. Encouraging myself and other women to be the BEST they can be and unlock their potential. Believing in myself and raising other women up! As understanding and appreciation for the diverse gifts, abilities and strengths we ALL bring to the planet. To see my daughter’s dreams for their futures become a reality! More women in positions of influence and decision-making.Professor Beazley promoted “Your Toolkit” as a useful resource to support women and families and provide help on the path to a more independent, confident and safe life.
