I had the pleasure of representing Snowy Monaro Regional Council at the Cooma Lions Club’s 60th anniversary celebrations on Saturday.

Charter member Bryce Peddie, District Governor Gordon Matthews and Cooma Lions Club President Lee Riley were joined by many Lions members from Cooma and across the district. The Cooma Lions Club has an outstanding commitment to improving our community. All members should be proud of the club’s history and its ongoing efforts in the community. On behalf of the current Council, I thank the Cooma Lions Club for their dedication and generosity to their fellow citizens.

When it rains it pours, particularly in Berridale. A deluge on Saturday evening has caused some damage to private houses, properties and Council infrastructure. Council crews have been working hard to clean-up the mess, clear roads of debris and return the Berridale playground to its usual state.

There was a strong turnout for the Bredbo bush fire recovery meeting on Saturday. Representatives from multiple government agencies and non-government organisations were present to discuss the recovery process with affected residents.

Deputy Mayor Lynley Miners chaired the meeting, and I thank Lynley for stepping in as I had a previous engagement.

On Tuesday, a bush fire recovery meeting was held in Jindabyne. Discussions included the affects the virtually non-existent summer tourism period has had on businesses and their employees.

A recovery meeting will be held in Cooma on Monday 24 February at the Cooma Multi-Function Centre. From 5pm there is a community BBQ with the meeting to commence at 6pm.

A list of venues and times for upcoming recovery assistance points can be found on Council’s website or by contacting Council on 1300 345 345.

We know there are many people struggling throughout our region as a result of the bush fires. Lifeline has launched a 24/7 phoneline to support people affected by bush fires - 13 HELP (13 43 57).

Crisis Supporters on 13 HELP (13 43 57) will provide support that is specific to bush fire affected people and referrals to services available in the caller’s community.
