Council has been awarded $1 million in funding from the State Government’s Active Community Infrastructure Grant for upgrades to Griffiths Park in Manunda.
The funding will contribute to the upgraded sports field lighting, 100 additional car parking spaces, net relocation and path connectivity, which will benefit both AFL and cricket.
Notably, the upgrade will allow Cairns to host significant State and Regional cricket games, as well as night AFL football for local clubs.
The project also includes connecting pathways and a large entry plaza, which are designed to encourage informal recreation for the general community.
The Leichhardt Junior Football Club based at Pezzutti Park also received $900,000 through this grant stream for an upgraded to the clubhouse, lights and fields, which are in accordance with the Pezzutti Park Master Plan.
