Bayside seniors with a connection to Japan are joining in the fun to help teach young children about Japanese culture.
A Japanese Intergenerational Playgroup for 0-5-year-old children welcomes older residents once a month.
The children who attend usually have at least one Japanese parent, and this program enhances their learning about Japanese language and culture.
Community Development Officer Kitty Miller said older Japanese residents or those who have spent time in Japan or speak the language can participate.
“The seniors share their skills and encourage the little ones to have a go. They lead activities like calligraphy, oil pastels, origami and storytelling in Japanese,” she said.
“The program is fantastic for children to learn more about Japan and some say it is like having a grandparent helping and interacting.
“For older residents, it is another way to reduce isolation and keep community connections.”
The playgroup has a new home for 2020 at the Brighton South Playhouse, located at 665 Hampton St Brighton. The group meets every Tuesday between 9.30am and 11.30am.
