Nominations Open for 2020 Senior Citizen of the Year Nominations are now open for Moree Plains Shire’s 2020 Senior Citizen of the year award. The award will be announced during Moree’s Senior Festival held from Sunday 29 March 2020 to Saturday 4 April 2020 and will celebrate an individual over the age of 60 who has made a significant contribution towards the Moree Plains community. Lorraine Bartel, organiser of the Seniors Festival and Seniors Citizen of the Year Award, commented on the importance of the award, “Recognising the important work seniors in our community have accomplished throughout their lives is extremely important as younger generations can learn from them and their experiences,” Ms Bartel said. “Senior citizens are very humble about their accomplishments - I think these awards are a wonderful chance to spotlight their success and celebrate their achievements and contribution in the community.” Last year’s winner, Aunty Mary Swan, was awarded for her work in Indigenous Health services as a nurse at the Moree Base Hospital and Pius X Aboriginal Corporation and after retirement continuing as an active volunteer member of the Pius elders group and Grandmothers Against Removals. Mary is a proud Gomeroi woman and a highly respected elder in the Moree community. Nominations are currently open now until Monday 23 March 2020. The Seniors Festival will be held from Sunday, 29 March 2020 to Saturday, 4 April 2020 with more details regarding activities to come soon.
