Road Resealing Program contributes to a safer and cleaner Western Downs

Western Downs Regional Council has this week completed the 2019-20 Regional Road Resealing Program, which delivers essential repairs and upgrades to the region’s roads while working towards a cleaner, greener future.
Council’s Infrastructure Services General Manager Graham Cook said the Program helped to ensure the longevity of the region’s roads, while reducing impacts on the environment.
“Council is committed to delivering a safe and maintained road network which connects our region, which is why we continue to invest in important works such as resealing,” Mr Cook said.
“As part of this financial year’s Regional Reseal Program, Council has delivered a $3 million program right across the Western Downs, which equates to more than 1.9 million litres of bitumen over 1 million square metres of road surface.
“Our Reseal Program also has an added environmental benefit, with around 241,000 kilograms of recycled rubber used as part of the bitumen mixture. That’s the equivalent of around 31,125 passenger car tyres.
“This recycled rubber – which is sourced from old tyres and blended locally – is not only environmentally friendly, but also provides a more durable, high quality product.”
Mr Cook said while the annual reseal program was now complete, works continued to address emergent road damage as a result of the recent wet weather.
“Council is continuing to assess and undertake repairs to numerous roads across the region as part of flood recovery efforts,” he said.
“These works are expected to take some time to complete, and I encourage residents to be safe when driving around the region and to always drive to the conditions.”
Residents are encouraged to report potholes or road damage to Council for investigation.
