2019 Student Leadership workshop participants

Western Downs Regional Council is expecting to host approximately 180 students from across the region at Council’s 2020 student leader workshop events next week.

The 2020 Student Leadership Workshop and Community Leader Morning Tea events will give the region’s youth the opportunity to connect and represent their schools while hearing from influential speakers in Chinchilla, Dalby, Miles and Tara.

Council’s Community and Liveability General Manager Jodie Taylor said these events were designed to encourage students and support schools across the region.

“Council is a huge advocate for excellent programs that engage and inspire our local youth so we’re proud to deliver these student leader workshops for the fourth consecutive year,” Mrs Taylor said.

“These young people are the future leaders of our region and it’s vital that we acknowledge the impact they will make in our communities.”

Former Olympian and current Dean of Students at Cromwell College, University of Queensland, Krishna Stanton will be attending the morning tea events to share her story with the student leader cohorts.

“My hope is to inspire in young people the realisation that they have the world at their feet and that nothing is beyond them if they have the will to pursue their goals,” Ms Stanton said.

“I tell my story in the hope that students will realise that life is often an unpredictable journey and I hope that it can give them confidence in the fact that hard work, persistence and determination can help achieve their goals and make them realise that anything is possible.

“To be a leader you do not need to wear a badge – leadership comes in all shapes and forms and a key attribute is to lead by example.”

The 2020 Student Leadership Workshop and Community Leader Morning Tea events will also welcome community members from across the Western Downs who will be sharing their community experiences with the local youth.
