Council is reminding residents to think before they flush. Large amounts of solid material is being flushed, causing blockages in council’s sewers, pump stations and intakes to wastewater treatment plants.
A council spokesperson said “flushing solid materials such as wet wipes, facial tissues, cotton buds, sanitary items and food scraps can cause a blockage in the sewer system.
“A blockage in the sewer system can then cause an overflow in your home, back yard and street,” he said.
“This is a major health risk to you as a resident and the community at large.
“Council is committed to ensuring essential services such as water, wastewater and waste are not compromised amid the coronavirus outbreak, however, we need everyone to be mindful of what they are putting down their drains and toilets.
“Not only is it time-consuming and costly for council, but it can be very costly for residents who have to hire services of a plumber to deal with blockages or overflow,” the council spokesperson said.
