Lachlan Shire Council is pleased to announce it is now providing a weekly waste collection service to 30 residential and community buildings in the Murrin Bridge community.
The new service is being operated through Lachlan Waste Services, who will collect the community’s waste every Thursday.
The arrangement was formalised on Tuesday when 240-litre bins were delivered to the community by Lachlan Waste Services and Lachlan Shire Environmental and Waste Coordinator Rowan Bentick.
The issuing of the bins provides residents with a safe method to store and dispose of waste during the current COVID-19 situation and into the future.
Mr Bentick said he was happy to see the community benefit from the new service.
“Council is excited to extend its waste service to Murrin Bridge, providing an effective waste removal service to residents,” he said, adding, “Waste is disposed of at a licenced waste facility.”
The Indigenous community with a population of around 86 people, near Lake Cargelligo, joined the Shire in September last year. It was previously a part of Cobar Shire but enjoyed a close relationship with Lachlan Shire.
The community’s waste was previously collected using a community tripper truck, operated by Ready Group, which disposed of the waste at the local community landfill.
Murrin Bridge Local Aboriginal Land Council CEO Judith Bartholomew has welcomed the waste initiative by Council.
“It's great to have the waste sorted,” she said. “It will be a better system and more hygienic than the last service.
“It's great that Murrin Bridge has the same services as every (other) community in the State. Working together with Lachlan Shire to have a better outcome for our community is great.”
An official welcome ceremony for the community is being organised by Council and will take place once the current public health restrictions are lifted.
