Flu vaccinations now available

The annual influenza vaccination program has started throughout the Gannawarra, with health services working together to ensure high vaccination rates in light of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said that there were multiple ways residents can access influenza vaccine, including through local general practices and health clinics, pharmacies, or through Council’s immunisation program.

“As we enter into the annual flu season, I encourage all community members to book in for a flu shot,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“It is especially important during the current Coronavirus pandemic as having two viruses circulating together increases the risk of complications.”

At-risk population groups include people aged 65 years and over, all children aged six months to less than five years, those with pre-existing medical conditions, pregnant women and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious virus that disrupts the lives of millions of Australians. Latest figures show that up to one in five Australians suffer from influenza each year and about 1,500 die from complications.

“While getting vaccinated against the flu won’t protect against Coronavirus, it will help protect against the most severe influenza virus strains expected to circulate in the community over the coming months,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“We want all our residents to be protected as we move into the influenza season.”

Should proof of influenza immunisation for the purposes of education, employment or visiting aged care facilities be required, residents are advised to discuss this requirement with the relevant immunisation provider at the time of booking.

“Immunisation providers will be able to provide proof of immunisation after you receive your flu shot but they will need to have this ready for your collection,” Mayor Learmonth said.

Residents can book in to be immunised against influenza by contacting their local general practice, health clinic, pharmacy or by contacting Council on (03) 5450 9333.
