Wyndham City 8 Apr 2020

Are you a young person with a passion for politics, law and government?

If so, Wyndham City Council encourages you to apply for the Wyndham Youth Civic Participation Project.

The project is for the municipality’s aspiring community leaders and policy makers, who are aged 17 – 25.

The twelve successful applicants will learn about how bills are turned into laws, ask questions of senior public servants and gain an insight into the machinations of Local, State and Federal Governments.

Wyndham Mayor and Learning City portfolio holder Cr Josh Gilligan said the initiative was one that was close to his heart.

“Politics for me is the belief in the possibility that change is possible, that a boy who grew up in country Victoria with a population of 2,500 people could go on to lead a city of over 270,000 people as its youngest ever Mayor,” Cr Gilligan said.

“The belief that no matter who you are or how you started off in life, it is the power of ideas, your imagination and hard work that is essential to achieving the change you’re seeking.”

“That’s what inspired me to get involved in government and why I encourage Wyndham’s young people to also get involved – it is the best mechanism to achieve change.”

The project includes a four-day tour of Canberra in 2021, a daytrip to the Victorian Parliament, a meet-and-greet with senior public servants and dinner with Wyndham Councillors, either in-person or online.

To apply, complete the online application form outlining your interests and future goals by the 6th of July 2020. You will also be required to submit the details of a referee.

After the 6th of July, all applications will be reviewed, and the winners announced on the 30th of July.
