Bagot and Nightcliff Ovals are also part of the $2.8 project, being delivered by local contractor ESPEC PH, in line with City of Darwin’s focus on supporting local businesses. The Urban Oval Lighting Project is a collaboration between two levels of government, with the Northern Territory Government funding the project and City of Darwin project managing and delivering the project. The Project aims to increase opportunities for the community to participate in sport. “This is a significant project,” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis “and a reflection on how, when two levels of government work together, great outcomes are produced for our community.” “It is critical that during this difficult time, whilst we respond to COVID-19, that major projects like this continue as they employ locals and support our economy.” The Darwin community is supportive of the project, with community consultation showing 94% of survey respondents backing the project. “City of Darwin is delighted to have this level of community support for the project.” “Once complete this project will enable sports training and matches to be played at cooler times of the day and provide opportunities for increased participation,” Lord Mayor concluded.
