Dear residents,

These are unique and challenging times.

While we are feeling uncertain about what tomorrow may bring and how our lives might be affected in the future, it is during times like this that we are reminded of what is most important.

This year, Easter celebrations will look a lot different - and perhaps take on a new meaning - as we’re faced with spending more time at home under social distancing rules to help combat the spread of coronavirus.

Easter is a religious time for many people in our community. It is wonderful to see many churches preparing for this important holiday by embracing new ways of worshiping. To adhere to social distancing guidelines, some churches have shifted services online in time for Easter.

I am heartened by the many stories of positivity, resilience, community spirit and kindness in Maroondah. For those who have reached out to an elderly or disabled neighbour and those living alone, or for those individuals or businesses that have helped put together care packages, or shared goodwill messages on social media to keep that sense of connection, I say ‘thank you’.

It’s also been wonderful to see neighbourhoods uniting together in a ‘bear hunt’ with so many teddy bears, and rainbows, popping up across our city as a welcome distraction during a time when daily routines have changed for both children and adults.

When we tune into these positive aspects, we are united in hope.

I know that many of our retail, tourism, hospitality and recreation businesses are hurting. We must support them to ensure that, when this crisis is over, people can continue to work, live and thrive in our wonderful community.

Together we can each do our bit to protect and help each other.

I believe there’s also an opportunity here to rethink what our daily lives could be in the absence of going out and to appreciate what really matters - human life and family.

On behalf of Maroondah City Council, I would like to wish all residents a Happy Easter.

Take care and stay well.

Mayor, Cr Mike Symon
