Hobart's CBD now smoke-free

Published on 15 April 2020

A large portion of Hobart's city centre is now smoke-free.

Effective from today (15 April), a new smoke-free area spans three blocks, bounded by Collins, Campbell, Liverpool and Murray streets. Early indications show that many CBD businesses and retailers are supportive of this change.

Several smoke-free areas had already been designated around the city, including Collins Court, Elizabeth Mall, the University Rose Gardens and Franklin Square.

Smoke-free areas help promote healthy behaviours and support people who have or are trying to quit, while reducing the health risks associated with passive smoking.

Around the city, designated smoke-free areas are indicated by bright blue signage and standard No Smoking signs. Smoking of herbal or e-cigarettes (vaping), as well as tobacco, are prohibited in these smoke-free areas.
