Community members and residents are invited to join in an ANZAC Day Driveways at Dawn tribute on Saturday 25 April.
Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White is encouraging all locals to join the ANZAC Day Driveway Tribute in honour of those who have served and sacrificed for this nation.
“While our usual commemorative events have been cancelled this year, it does not mean that we cannot remember and show gratitude to our Diggers”, said Councillor White.
“We are encouraged to embrace the spirit of mateship and stand in quiet contemplation at the end of our driveways, or on balconies and patios, at 6am on April 25.
“Community members can safely commemorate a different kind of dawn service by lighting a candle at 5.55am and joining the ANZAC Day Driveway Dawn Service.
“ABC Pilbara will be broadcasting and residents are asked to tune in to hear The Ode, The Last Post and join in a one minute silence.
“Residents are being asked to share a short 15-second video of their street at 5.55am and send to the Shire’s Community Services team so that we can compile a snapshot of our tribute and share online.
“If you wish to lay a wreath at your local memorial, please ensure you maintain social distancing and be respectful of other community members who may be there.
“As part of this resilient ANZAC Day, RSLWA are also inviting the community to commemorate by having children draw poppies on their driveways as a gesture of respect and following the radio service fire up the barbecue for a traditional gunfire breakfast of bacon, eggs and sausages plus a mug of tea or coffee to toast the fallen.
“You can also post your ANZAC Day tributes and photos to RSLWA’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
“If you would usually donate at a ceremony or breakfast, you can still contribute to the annual ANZAC Appeal, which ensures the health, wellbeing and advocacy of today’s Veterans and / or to Legacy, who provide services to Australian families suffering after the injury or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service”.
Thanks to our community partners Rio Tinto and the Chevron-operated Wheatstone project for their support in making Ashburton a vibrant place to life and their continued assistance as we work through the COVID-19 pandemic together to ensure a robust outlook for our region.
