Wyndham City 20 Apr 2020

Wyndham City adopted its Draft Towards Equality Policy Statement and Action Plan to be sent out for public exhibition, at its Ordinary Council Meeting last week.

The report, which focuses on women, men, and gender diverse people across all ages and life stages, will be available for public feedback on The Loop for the next eight weeks.

Safer Communities portfolio holder Cr Kim McAliney said the Plan was to ensure Wyndham was a safe and inclusive community where everyone, regardless of their gender, have equal access to power, resources, and opportunities and are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness, in a life free from violence.

Cr McAliney said Towards Equality not only met the requirements of the new Victorian Government Gender Equality Act 2020, but champions Wyndham as a leader in equality when the Act comes into effect on 31st March 2021.

“Communities with greater gender equality have been shown to have better levels of social cohesion, higher levels of social connection, improved health and wellbeing and lower rates of violence – and that’s what we want for Wyndham,” Cr McAliney said.

“As a local government, we play an important role in promoting and supporting respectful, fair workplaces and communities, and we will continue to show leadership in achieving gender equality for all.”

“We are committed to eradicate gender-based discrimination and make Wyndham a community where everyone feels valued, respected, and has equal opportunity.”

“Gender equality is a human right that benefits everyone and enables full economic participation, which in turn yields economic benefits for the community.”

Council looks forward to hearing back from our community and encourages Wyndham residents read the Draft Towards Equality Policy Statement and Action Plan and complete the short survey, before 2nd June. Have your say here: https://theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au/towardsequality
