Opportunity for local artists to be part of a legacy

City of Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour is calling on local artists to show off their talents and earn $25,000 in the process.

Local artists are being encouraged to submit their designs for 10 new stations, as part of the Southwest Metro project. The stations included in the initiave run from Bankstown to Hurlstone Park and Marrickville.

Successful applicants will have their designs permanently installed at the entrance of these new stations in a digitally printed, semi-transparent artwork, and embedded in glass panels ranging from 10 to 50 square metres in size.

Mayor Asfour said this project represents an exciting opportunity for the City’s artists to have their work displayed in a permanent location to be appreciated by thousands of people over many years.

“We have such a diverse range of incredibly talented artists in almost every medium you could think of, so I would encourage each and every one of them to take part in designing a legacy public artwork,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Having a local artist’s work be displayed at one of our stations would only give residents more pride in their community.”

“Who knows more about our culture and history than the people who live here.”

Mayor Asfour said the City has a strong tradition in being innovative when it comes to artistic expression.

“We are a heartland for the arts and home to iconic artistic spaces such as the Bankstown Arts Centre because we understand the value of art and continually produce it with flare year after year,” Mayor Asfour said.

Create NSW has partnered with Sydney Metro to deliver up to $250,000 to 10 successful applicants.
