A volunteer program with an emphasis on greening our city was showing a rise in popularity and engagement before being suspended as a result of the coronavirus situation.
The Green Space Our Place (GSOP), until its suspension in March, had registered almost 200 new volunteers (197) from July 2019, compared to a total of 165 new registrations in the previous 12 months.
Volunteers were registered in 31 of the region’s 45 suburbs, the most from Whitfield with Manoora second.
The program also clocked-up more than 24,000 in volunteer hours, contributing to over 21,000 trees being propagated at the Stratford Nursery, with 5114 trees planted.
Most volunteers are females and 18-25 year olds are the dominant age bracket, largely due to Council’s partnership with Gapforce International Program, whose members participate quarterly.
