Have your say on Sturt Park play equipment

Sturt Park could soon feature a new double flying fox after Council modified its plans for the park's play area.

Initial upgrade plans for the park were primarily focused on the toddlers' area, however the scope was broadened after an audit of current equipment found that the flying fox would soon need to be replaced.

Council's General Manager, James Roncon, said the change in plans was reflective of Council's better approach to asset management.

"We're constantly gaining a better understanding of our asset base and the condition of items, and through that process we can make better-informed decisions," he said.

"The flying fox would need to be replaced in around 18 months anyway, so it made sense to get it done now as part of this upgrade.

"It's arguably the most popular piece of equipment in the park, so we're happy to make it a priority."

Mr Roncon said the public would be consulted over the next week on what equipment would go in the park.

"We have budget for a new flying fox, toddlers' castle, and a disability-inclusive play item, so we'll put some options out to the public via the internet," he said.

"We had hoped to conduct engagement through schools, but with the COVID-19 situation we'll stick to online consultation.

"Once that process is complete we'll look to start demolition work as soon as we're able, and we'll keep the public updated around the park's availability during the upgrade process."

The Sturt Park upgrade is funded through the NSW Government's Stronger Country Communities program.

Council will accept feedback on the play equipment options until May 1.
