An extensive consultation process has led to Council deciding on an integrated approach to parks development in Noble Park North.
Council was originally considering separate masterplans for Wal Turner Reserve and Barry Powell Reserve.
Due to the Reserves close proximity to each other, Council now believes the two reserves should be looked at together.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said when you considered the two parks as integrated and adjacent public open spaces, Council was better placed to deliver what the community wanted.
He said the size of Wal Turner Reserve meant the opportunity for expansion was limited but Barry Powel Reserve provided much better scope for sports expansion.
“Wal Turner Reserve has a character and charm that the community wanted to retain and we can achieve this by leaving the reserve essentially as it is,” Mayor Memeti said.
“Sporting Clubs that currently use the reserve will continue using the reserve if that is what they choose.”
He said while Wal Turner Reserve would remain substantially unchanged, Council acknowledged the need to upgrade Turner Pavilion.
“Council will begin planning and implementing these upgrades including improved facilities and much-needed change rooms for women at Turner Pavilion,” Mayor Memeti said.
“Council will also investigate the opportunity for more junior focused and women’s sports in the future.”
Mayor Memeti said Barry Powell Reserve was better placed to accommodate a sports expansion due to its size.
“Council will work with sports club, sports people and the broader community to investigate how their needs could be met with a planned, upgraded and enhanced Barry Powell Reserve.”
“We are confident that an integrated precinct will deliver the needs of our community both now and into the future.”
