The City welcomes NSW Government stimulus package

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer has welcomed the NSW Government’s $395 million Local Government stimulus package, but called for further support as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact revenue.

“City of Parramatta Council welcomes the NSW Government’s financial support during this unprecedented crisis,” Cr Dwyer said.

“It’s an acknowledgement of the critical role that local councils play in delivering vital services to the community. 

“An additional $250 million of low interest loans from TCorp to kick start community infrastructure is very welcome as it helps support local communities and local jobs.

“The Local Council Job Retention Allowance of $1500 per worker per fortnight is also desperately needed given local councils do not get the benefit of the Federal Government JobKeeper payment.”

However, Cr Dwyer said more financial support from the State and Federal governments will be required to ensure that councils can continue to deliver vital services to the community.

“The COVID-19 crisis is having a significant impact on all 128 local councils across the State. City of Parramatta Council is forecasting revenue losses in the range of $20 million to $40 million over the next 12 months,” Cr Dwyer said.

“We have concerns that without further financial support from the State and Federal governments, services to the community and jobs may be impacted.

“We’re doing everything we can to ensure we continue to deliver services, keep staff in jobs, progress ‘shovel ready’ projects to stimulate the local economy, and plan for when restrictions are eased.”

Earlier this month, Council unveiled its $3 million COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Package, providing financial relief and assistance to local residents, businesses and community groups. Council has also sought to reassign staff to avoid job losses.
