Swing into action: Golf courses reopen to eager patrons

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City had worked closely with management to ensure strict health and safety measures were put in place.

“The health and safety of residents and course staff is of paramount importance, and I would like to remind patrons of the City’s golf courses that rules around social distancing remain in place following advice from the State and Federal Government.”

With groups limited to four players and eight-minute intervals between departures, Carramar Golf Club Manager Tim Crosbie said maintaining social distancing of 1.5 metres while out on the course shouldn’t be an issue for patrons.

“Golf really lends itself to social distancing, and we’ve made some further modifications to ensure public safety,” he said.

“We have removed rakes from the bunkers and, by adding foam-filled holes, the need to touch the course flags. Marangaroo Golf Club Head Professional Robert Farley said similar changes had been made to its course as well.

“Our on-site café is serving takeaway-only options for the time being,” he said. “All our payments and bookings are now handled online or over the phone.”

“Since reopening, we’ve expanded our booking hours to seven days a week.”

Mr Crosbie said Carramar’s regular patrons were also “ecstatic” to be back out on the course and working on their game.

“We were closed for about three weeks, so I think our regulars were a bit starved for exercise,” he said. “But now we’re back and the phone is ringing off the hook with eager golfers.”
