Rejuvenating the night economy, road upgrades and a new splash park are just some of the projects in the City of Canterbury Bankstown’s draft Operation plan for 2020/21.

The initiatives are all part of the Council’s $342 million operational plan, of which $73.8 million is to be spent on an impressive capital works program.

The plan, which will go on public exhibition, continues to deliver the services and facilities the community demands with a focus on waste collection, street cleaning and park and road maintenance. And a commitment to continue the Meals on Wheels service at the current, or increased levels.

Mayor Khal Asfour said it was a challenge pulling together the budget due to these uncertain times and not knowing the true financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a responsible and caring budget which first and foremost takes into account the needs of our community”, Mayor Asfour said.

“While we have had to make some difficult decisions, this plan looks towards the next 12 months, and we want to ensure our locals share a similar vision,” he said.

Mayor Asfour said it was imperative to support the local economy once we got through this pandemic.

“I will begin a discussion with the community around how we can rejuvenate our night-time economy. One suggestion being floated is extended trading hours in some areas to assist struggling small businesses”.

Mayor Asfour said funding had also been allocated to reenergize a number of parks into vivid recreational spaces for all to enjoy, including a new splash park in Greenacre.

Other projects which are earmarked for funding include:

$22.2 million on road and transport improvements including Chapel Rd and Haldon Street; and$28.8 million on parks and buildings, such as Parry Park and Playford Park playgrounds and Hurlstone Park Community Centre.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown’s operation plan is now on public exhibition and the community has a chance to provide their feedback.

“These are challenging times and we are looking forward to continue to deliver all your essential services and some exciting new projects”, Mayor Asfour said.
