Upgrading Wyndham's stormwater wetlands

Works to upgrade the Flinders Crescent stormwater treatment wetland in Wyndham Vale are now more than halfway complete, and on track to be completed by June.

The project is the first wetland to be upgraded as part of Wyndham City’s $3 million Healthier Waterways program, which will result in a total of nine stormwater treatment wetlands being upgraded by 2022.

Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said the wetland was being significantly extended in size, with gross pollutant traps installed and new flora planted.

“Gross pollutant traps are complex structures that will capture 95 per cent of litter and solid waste before they enter our natural waterways,” Cr Marcus said.

“They operate in a similar way to your bathroom sink but on a larger scale, using a whirlpool effect to funnel litter into a storage sump below.”

“And the new plants will soak up excess nutrients, effectively cleaning and filtering the stormwater that drains out from this wetland.”

“Once the stormwater has been treated, it will flow on to our natural waterways, including the Werribee River and Skeleton Creek, which in turn flow to Port Phillip Bay.”

“So, Wyndham City’s Healthier Waterways program will benefit communities across Victoria.”

“In addition, the expanded wetlands will create a home for wildlife, including frogs, insects and birds, and further beautify local neighbourhoods.”
