Construction of $1.4 million sports facility begins

Construction of a new community sporting facility commenced at Leatherback Park in Alkimos last week as part of a joint $1.4 million local & State Government investment in local, grassroots sports.
The new facility will feature a multi-purpose room, two change rooms, kiosk, first-aid room, umpire room and public toilets.
Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said continuing capital works projects throughout the current health pandemic was vital.
“The City’s planned capital works projects provide important community benefits both now and into the future.
“In the short term we are supporting our local economy and providing local job opportunities in the planning, building and construction industries. Long term, this new facility will bring modern amenities to local sporting groups and their members, affording an opportunity for them to prosper beyond this pandemic.
“Our local sporting clubs provide a means for our communities to connect with one another while keeping physically active. I want to thank the State Government for their support of this project, that will meet the needs of a fast growing region that is set to double in population over the next twenty years,” Mayor Roberts said.
Turning the architect’s vision into reality will be Bistel Construction, whose tender submission was accepted by the Wanneroo Council in March of this year. Bistel Construction Project Manager Daniel Martin said that he was happy to get his crew on site to start construction. “The City of Wanneroo has remained dependable in their decision to continue delivering planned capital works projects amidst these uncertain times. We want to thank the City of Wanneroo for the award of the project that has enabled us to employ local staff and provide continuous work for our subcontractors. We are happy to get our crew on site to start construction on what will be a successful build,” Mr Martin said.
Leatherback Park is home to various junior and adult sporting clubs that competitively play both winter and summer sports including football, cricket, lacrosse and other ball sports.
The new structure will replace the three transportables currently on site and construction is due for completion in November 2020.
