Community members are being asked not to build cairns, particularly along the foreshore of Long Reef Headland, as these can cause damage to our special coastal environment.

Cairns – manmade structures made of stacked rocks - have recently appeared in high numbers around Long Reef Headland and have been using rocks from the important intertidal habitat on the rock platforms at Long Reef.

Council officers recently dismantled these structures and returned the rocks to the coastal areas to minimise further impact to this important coastline.

Rangers will continue to monitor the area to ensure that this important environment is protected and to discourage any further cairns from being built.
