With many of us spending more time at home preparing meals while in isolation, it’s likely a lot of what we don’t eat will be thrown out.

Plate scraps, leftovers and food that’s passed its use-by date make up a lot of the rubbish produced by Maroondah households each week.

Home composting is a great and easy way to minimise household food waste ending up in landfill.

During International Compost Awareness Week this May, Council will be running two free online beginner compost workshops that will teach you everything you need to know about home composting.

The workshops will be held on:

Thursday 7 May, 7.30pm to 9.30pm (7.20pm login for 7.30pm start) Saturday 9 May, 10am to 12pm (9.50am login for 10am start)

Register for online workshop

Once you register, you will be provided with a link to join the workshop. You can then join in and learn from the comfort of your home.

In the workshops you will learn all you need to know to set up and maintain your own worm farm, composting system or Bokashi bin at home. All participants will go into the draw to win a $50 compost revolution voucher.

Maroondah Deputy Mayor, Councillor Marijke Graham says composting is simple and can help to remove food waste from your household garbage bin, reducing the burden on landfill while replenishing your garden or lawn.

“I have my own composting system set up at home, and you get a huge reward for very little work. All it takes is emptying your kitchen scraps into the compost bin and turning over the contents of the bin with a garden fork once a week. It is similar if not easier than taking the garbage out,” explains Marijke.

Tea bags, used coffee grounds, egg shells, potato and banana peels, avocado skins, newsprint, cardboard and other types of paper are among many other items that can be composted.

What's more, you don’t need a garden in order to deposit your compost. It can also be used to fertilise trees, bushes, flowers and houseplants; or shared with a neighbour or friend who does garden.

Council offers residents up to 60 per cent off a range of at-home compost systems, including worm farms, pet poo and green cone solar composters, and composting accessories. To order a system, or for further information on the available products, visit the

The online presentation will be hosted by Council’s waste education officer. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions via a Q&A function during the presentation.
