An unexpected surge in attendance in the Burnie town centre has occurred following removal of the additional retail restrictions in northwest Tasmania.
The number of vehicles seeking parking in town and using on-street parking space has prompted the Burnie City Council to reinstate normal operation of Council provided parking facilities.
“We had anticipated there may be a little more activity than during the last three weeks” Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said this morning. “However, the town has really kicked off despite the Tasmanian statewide stay at home and gathering directions introduced some weeks before Easter remaining in force.”
“Parking controls will again apply to the use of all Council provided parking spaces. Parking fees must be paid and time controls must be observed.”
“It is obvious some motorists have taken advantage of the withdrawal of Council from parking controls over the last three (3) weeks. It is important for the convenience and safety of all who are required to make essential trips into town that parking rules be observed. Council has recommenced parking patrols to monitor for compliance.”
“Council will reopen the Marine Terrace Car Park from this week between 7.30am and 7.00pm Monday to Saturday. The situation will be kept under review as the effect of restrictions due to the COVID-19 state of emergency continue.”
The Council will provide the first two (2) hours of parking in the MTCP without charge from when the government lifts the continuing restrictions on movement and gathering for an initial period of three (3) months.
“The objective is to encourage people back into the town once the emergency is over and it is safe to move around more freely and gather in larger numbers. However, it would be inappropriate and irresponsible for the Council to offer any incentive for people to come into town and stay longer while emergency continues and the risk of spread of COVID-19 is still high.”
