Lithgow Council is offering primary school students the opportunity to participate in the ‘We are Waste Wise’ art competition in Term 2, where they are invited to pay tribute to their local area by creating an original drawing based around what they think is special about their village or local environment, under Council’s brand, ‘Our Place…Our Future’.  The competition opens on the first day of Term 2 (28 April 2020) and closes on 3 July 2020.

With primary school students doing much of their school work from home in Term 2 under the NSW Government’s staggered ‘return to school’ arrangements, the ‘We are Waste Wise’ Primary School Art Competition will replace the ‘in-house’ Primary School Waste Education Program provided in previous years.  This program is unable be offered in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated social distancing requirements.

The art competition contains links to Australian National Curriculum areas Humanities & Social Sciences and Media Arts and prize categories include Overall Winner; Runner up; Best Local Landmark/ Landscape; and Encouragement Award.

“2020 is turning out to be a particularly tough year for families and students in the Lithgow area, due to the combined impact of the bushfires over the summer months and the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition presents a great opportunity for the community to reflect on and celebrate the many reasons the wider Lithgow area is a special place to live” said Council’s Mayor, Cr. Ray Thompson.
