The Shire of Coolgardie continues to look at ways to support its local community and businesses during and post the coronavirus (COVID-19) health pandemic. This week, the Shire is launching the Community Connect portal on the Shire’s website. The portal includes health advice from State and Federal governments as well as a variety of online resources including craft and colouring activities for kids, online classes, videos from the Shire President, ‘how to’ videos for tech support as well as support for small businesses.
Shire President Malcom Cullen said the portal enables the Shire and Community Resource Centres to continue to provide important services to the local community online.
“The current pandemic has prevented the Shire from hosting playgroups and other face-to-face activities in our Recreations Centres. We wanted to find a way to continue to provide these services to our community online, as we understand the value of social and emotional benefits these programs provide.”
“One of our health partners, Bright Minds, have uploaded a number of their paediatric occupational therapy classes to the portal including Baby Moves and Read Aloud sessions. There are also recorded Story Time videos for parents and young kids, as well as links to important mental health support services.”
The portal launch follows a number of other COVID-19 initiatives launched by the Shire of Coolgardie including phone call wellness checks and a Meals on Wheels program for the most vulnerable members of the community.
Since its launch in April, the wellness checks program has expanded to include residents who are new to town, parents, and anyone who has self-referred or referred others to the program.
“Our wellness checks program is proving popular with the local community. We currently have 40 Coolgardie residents and 60 Kambalda residents utilising the service weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on their needs,” said Cr Cullen.
The Shire recently hosted a virtual ANZAC Day commemoration on Facebook which reached over 44,000 people and was extremely well-received by the local community.
