Work has begun on three upgrades planned for Church Street village. The works include an upgrade of the road surface, streetscape updates and a project to improve car parking in the area.

Roadwork measures involve closing the road from New Street to St Andrews Streets until mid-May before the road is open to one way traffic.

Council decided to fast track construction while Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions are in place and are now undertaking night works to replace the road surface between St Andrews Street and Middle Brighton railway line. This section will be completed by Friday 8 May. Works will be undertaken in the late afternoon/early evening between St Andrews and New Streets to replace the road surface early in June.

The car parking improvements project involves installing car parking sensor pods and real-time parking signage to make it easier to find a car parking space. Plans for the signage locations are currently being finalised.

Installation of sensor pods will take place in the off-street car parks from 11 – 18 May between 6am – 11am but no noisy work will commence before 7am. Following this, we will install the sensor pods along Church Street in early June.

Once the work is finished there will be less vehicle congestion and an improved experience for shoppers and diners visiting Church Street village.

Pedestrians will have access to Church Street throughout the works, drivers can expect minor delays and parking to be impacted.

Please be cautious when driving through the road works and follow the directions of traffic control crew on-site.

Weather permitting, the Church Street projects are expected to be completed in July 2020.

Councillors decided at the 28 April Ordinary Meeting of Council to put the roundabout upgrade for Church and St Andrews Streets on hold while we assess alternative locations for installing pedestrian crossings on Church Street.
