Wyndham City Council is calling on the community to report the illegal dumping of rubbish and keep Wyndham clean.
Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said most residents were doing the right thing and booking their free hard waste collections to get rid of bulky rubbish, but there has been a spate of illegal dumping in recent weeks.
“During the first week of May 806 people booked hard waste collections, 739 people visited the tip but 116 people dumped their rubbish illegally,” Cr Marcus said.
“While it is disappointing to see people discarding their rubbish illegally, we can see that the majority of Wyndham residents are taking care of our environment and using the proper channels for their waste.”
“Dumping rubbish in our parks, nature reserves, and on the side of the road not only impacts our local amenity but can damage the ecosystem and protected flora and fauna.”
“Many residents are using their free time to clean out their homes and unfortunately, we’ve had individuals and commercial businesses dispose of this rubbish illegally.”
“Council recently issued fines to commercial providers for dumping residents’ rubbish illegally instead of taking it to the tip. People need to make sure they are using reputable companies to dispose of rubbish legally.”
“We are asking the community to report offenders and gather as many details as possible such as a registration number, a company name on the side of the vehicle or anything that may help Council locate the culprit.”
“When rubbish dumped on public land is reported, our teams will collect it and start their investigation.”
“People caught dumping rubbish will be made clean up the mess and face fines of between $330 and $8,000 - or even more depending on the severity and type of dumping. Some of these offences can carry a criminal conviction.”
“Landowners can help prevent illegal rubbish being dumped on their vacant property by erecting fencing around it, so it is not so accessible.”
“We ask you to check your land regularly and ask your neighbours to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and report it to Council.”
“There are no excuses for dumping rubbish around Wyndham, especially with three hard waste collections annually for every resident that can be booked on demand.”
“The Refuse Disposal Facility is open to the public and commercial operators from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday and from 8.30am to 4pm on Saturday.”
