Watch website for facility reopening news
City of Cockburn 7 May 2020
Residents are urged to regularly check the City of Cockburn website for updates on the expected reopening of local services and facilities, as Western Australia begins to emerge from COVID-19 isolation.

As Federal and State Government announcements start to roll out in coming days and weeks, these will determine what and when local government facilities and services are allowed to reopen to the public.

City of Cockburn Acting CEO Daniel Arndt has asked residents to be patient as City staff prepare for the staged reopening of facilities, which will not be immediate due to operational considerations.

“While the City has no advanced notice of Federal or State Government announcements, or what they might entail, the City is planning for various scenarios, and will need some time to prepare to reopen services and facilities,” Mr Arndt said.

“As soon as any announcements are made, the City’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery team will convene to decide the City’s response which will be actioned as quickly as possible.

“It will take up to two weeks to action some openings. While we have plans for cleaning regimes and signage ready for distancing and hygiene practices, there are practical considerations, especially for facilities like Cockburn ARC.

“Before we can operate the swimming pools, the water needs to be heated over a period of a week. The State Government Health Department then needs to declare that the pools meets appropriate standards, in the interest of public safety.

“Certain services will need to re-train staff on any new operational/public safety practices, which are not yet known.

“We are talking to our sporting clubs to ensure that they can open as quickly as possible following any announcements, but again this will not immediate.

“We know that our community will be keen to get out and use the park facilities. The 100+ barbecues and 100+ drinking fountains will need to be made operational by licensed professionals. These tasks, and reopening all public toilets, is likely to take about a week.

“The good news is that Cockburn Libraries are in a position to be able to open their doors fairly soon after the State Government lifts the current restrictions.”
