As COVID-19 impacts continue to be felt across Fremantle, we’ve put together this handy guide on how City services are operating to help you navigate these changing times.
Community Safety
Our Community Safety team is still regularly patrolling our streets to help keep the city safe. Not only do these guys work closely with police to monitor restrictions imposed as a result of COVID-19 reduce anti-social behaviour, they’re also busy rescuing lost dogs and refilling the compostable dog poop bags at your local park. Watch the team in action recently foiling an attempted retail theft here. You can contact the team on 1300 360 666 or [email protected] if you require assistance.
Waste collection
Rest assured, Freo’s regular waste collection is continuing to take place during the COVID-19 health crisis. This includes your residential bins, along with bins in public spaces like our parks and beaches. Click here to find out your bin collection day if you’re unsure.
Fremantle Recycling Centre
A scaled back version of the Fremantle Recycling Centre is open to Fremantle and East Fremantle residents! Simply get your proof of address checked at the gate before dropping off your recycled goods into the large skip bins. Accepted materials include cardboard, white goods, metal, yellow-top bin recycling, motor oil, mattresses ($33.50 each) and tyres ($20.10 each), with eftpos payment accepted only. The service is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12noon-4pm and Saturdays from 8am-12noon. For more info, click here.
Parks and beaches
Our parks and beaches are open for your daily walk, run or swim. Please remember to follow physical distancing rules and stay 1.5 metres away from other people while out and about. The two person limit was recently relaxed to groups of 12 as the spread of COVID-19 reduces in WA. Just remember play spaces, public showers and most public toilets are still closed however as a preventative measure. If you are out and about and nature calls, the toilets at South Beach, Kings Square and Leighton Beach are still open and cleaned regularly. Click here to see a list of affected facilities.

Free street parking
Street parking across the city centre is currently free to make it easier to support our local businesses. Just remember to stick to the times displayed on the signs. Check out this list from Visit Fremantle of cafes and restaurants open for takeaways.

The not-for-profit organisation has been providing subsidised legal services to low income earners for over 30 years! Services include legal advice, document drafting, mediation and more. Click here to find out more or to make a phone appointment.
Neighbour to Neighbour
Join our volunteering program Neighbour to Neighbour to help vulnerable people in the community during COVID-19. You can help with simple errands, including grocery shopping, dog walking, posting mail or simply checking in with a friendly phone call. To sign up as a volunteer, or request assistance, click here.
Fremantle CAT bus
The free CAT bus is still running, with two routes that cover the city centre. While people are still encouraged to stay home, the CAT bus makes it easier to do your food shopping or run other essential errands. Check out this list from Visit Fremantle if you’re wondering what supermarkets, bakeries and liquor stores are open around town. Click here to see CAT bus route and list of stops to safely plan your next journey.
Fremantle Arts Centre
Galleries at Fremantle Arts Centre (FAC) are shut for now but you can still view their exhibitions online! The 2020 Revealed Exhibition features independent and Nyoongar artists from metropolitan Perth and the South West alongside artists from WA’s remote and regional art centres. You can even purchase the works online, with 100% of sales going directly to WA Aboriginal art centres and artists. FAC’s gift store FOUND has also just recently launched its online shop, which features works from over 130 WA artists and makers!

Planning approvals
What better time than now to do some projects around the home! Projects like installing a shed, patio or additions to your home require building permits, which the City’s planning team can assist with. While face to face planning appointments are no longer taking place, you can still chat to one of our planning officers over the phone about any queries you have. Simply call the customer service team on 1300 MYFREO or email [email protected] to arrange a time.
Council meetings
Council meetings are still being held, but under a new schedule with two meetings a month. The meetings are held at the City of Fremantle admin building and are scheduled for every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. While you won’t be able to attend these meetings in person due to COVID-19 restrictions, you can read the minutes from each meeting on our website here. Public questions and statements can be submitted to [email protected] before 4pm on the day of the meeting. Click here to view the agendas for council meetings.
Projects and programs
The City of Fremantle continues to operate and deliver key infrastructure projects and asset maintenance renewals during this time. We continue to deliver our capital works program with project including the Harvey Beach jetty renewal, Ord Street, South Terrace and Stirling Highway upgrades and the Kings Square Renewal project. The delivery of these projects will provide significant economic stimulus to the city and benefits to residents and visitors.
City business continues as (almost) usual
Staff in most areas of the City’s operations are working from home to deliver on ongoing projects and programs to service our community. This includes building approvals, environmental health, economic development, parks and landscaping, engineering, community development, sports and recreation, arts and culture, engineering, cleaning and facilities management and much more. As well providing ongoing service delivery, many staff are also helping to plan for recovery in crucial areas such as economy, community and infrastructure.
