Camperdown now has a designated Bushfire Place of Last Resort, but Corangamite Shire Council has reminded residents it is no substitute for a bushfire plan.
“Bushfire Places of Last Resort are a place to go when all other contingencies have failed,” Mayor Neil Trotter said. “These locations are chosen because they may provide some protection from direct flame and heat from a fire, but they do not guarantee safety. They are not an alternative to planning to leave early or to stay and defend your property.”
The site is on Manifold Street, between Cressy Street and Bath Street and includes the north side service road and centre reserve.
Council identified the site and enlisted the CFA to assess it against criteria including radiant heat, access and exit, vegetation clearance, traffic management and other uses of the site.
Bushfire Places of Last Resort are chosen based on bushfire planning and are not a place of shelter from other types of emergencies, such as floods or storms.
“The key to keeping yourself and your family safe is to plan ahead. Get the Fire Ready Kit from your local CFA or download it here to help you prepare your household's bushfire plan.”
