Quick approvals allow development activity to remain strong

Development activity in the Shire has remained strong despite COVID-19 with 91 building licence applications received over March and April. This is a promising increase on the same period last year which saw only 76 applications come through the building department.

Applications for planning approval have also remained steady with 158 submissions received in the first quarter compared to last year’s 161 applications at the same  time.

Planning Services recently introduced a method of fast-tracking simple applications and the result is a noticeable increase on the determinations issued since its implementation.

Strategic Projects Officer, Matt Cuthbert acknowledged the effort of the planning  team and noted that the fast tracking has been well received by the community and its success is evidenced in the greater number of approvals issued in 2020.

“158 approvals have been issued so far, which is a notable increase on the135 approvals issued for the same period last year.”

“Over the first week of May, 40% of all planning applications were determined within 21 days, well in advance of the 60 day statutory timeframe allowed”, he said.

Mr Cuthbert said he was pleased to see builders and tradies continuing to work around the region despite the uncertain economic conditions.

“Our local building and design industry are creating great homes and buildings for people to use and live in. We want to assist them to continue their important work and are now able to respond to the strong demand for permits with quick turnaround times”.
