National Simultaneous Storytime is going to be extra special this year as Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Denise Knight will be the VIP Guest Storyteller on Wednesday, May 27.

The Mayor will join storytellers across Australia online from 11am broadcasting live from the Coffs Harbour Libraries Facebook page to share the tale of ‘Whitney and Britney –  Chicken Divas’ by Lucinda Gifford.

“I am so looking forward to this,” said Cr Knight. “I love reading stories to my grandkids now and I loved reading stories to my children when they were young. It’s such an important and lovely way to be with your kids and grandkids and have fun while they’re learning.

“Listening to stories and looking at the words is the foundation for literacy and all education, which shows how vital libraries are for our young people. It’s the main reason that I’m actively driving for a new library – to help improve literacy levels.

“Plus I love a bit of bling and what better book to read for that than ‘Whitney and Britney – Chicken Divas’.”

Every year an Australian picture book is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, homes and bookshops around Australia.  In other years, hundreds of thousands of children have taken part together in National Simultaneous Storytime.

“Storytime is one of our local libraries’ most popular activities,” said Roslyn Cousins, Council’s Team Leader Cultural Services. “Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, our story-tellers have been doing Storytime online via Facebook.

“We still wanted to make this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime as special as it has always been so we asked the Mayor to help out.”

‘Whitney and Britney – Chicken Divas’ is a fun tale of two chooks who dress up in sequins, tiaras and feather boas and sneak out of their coop every night to be the singing stars of their local nightclub – and what happens when their bemused owner finds out!

Everyone is welcome to fling on their bling, join the Mayor and be part of National Simultaneous Storytime. Just jump on the Coffs Libraries Facebook page at 11am on Wednesday, 27 May.
