Liverpool City Council has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement today of new funding for projects that will improve urban communities (tactical urbanism).

Liverpool has in recent weeks fast-tracked work to develop a suite of tactical urbanism opportunities that not only will quickly boost foot traffic and vibrancy in our recovering city centre, but will also support Council’s vision for the city centre as Sydney’s third CBD.

This work includes the Railway Serviceway project announced by the NSW Government today.

“The timing of this announcement is very important and it gives us an opportunity to transform our CBD and boost the local economy at the same time,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

Small businesses in the city are reporting to Council that they are experiencing reductions in trade of around 70  per cent, and both Western Sydney University and University of Wollongong campuses are closed.

Analysis undertaken using technology installed in partnership with the University of Wollongong has identified a more than 60 per cent drop in pedestrians and a more than 80 per cent drop in vehicle numbers in the city centre.

As Liverpool emerges from these unprecedented conditions, it is critical that we support a rapid return to vibrancy in our city centre and the NSW Government’s funding is a great opportunity to assist with this.

Council recently prepared a draft Public Domain Master Plan that sets out a long-term vision for Liverpool as Sydney’s third CBD, and tactical urbanism can be one of the most immediate steps in achieving this.

Council also submitted to the NSW Government a list of 23 shovel-ready projects, valued at over $120m, to support the rapid recovery of Liverpool (see: https://media.liverpool.nsw.gov.au/fotoweb/albums/Xp-ketaiCRSG0DM4sun7wgqcTc3O9Ya-4xiFiA/).

The projects identified by Council range from urban design and road upgrades to arts centre improvements and sustainability enhancements. Council looks forward to partnering with the NSW Government on fast tracking delivery of these projects.
