Shire residents suffering financial hardship due to loss of earnings experienced during the coronavirus shutdown should be aware that Council has a new hardship policy that may apply to their circumstances.
The COVID-19 Financial Hardship Policy provides a temporary framework for financial relief to individuals, business and organisations who need assistance from the impacts of the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Eligible applicants will be able to access deferred payment options and interest waivers on debts due. In exceptional circumstances some amounts due may be waived.
Director Corporate and Community Services David Rae said the COVID-19 Financial Hardship Policy provided a framework for financial relief to individuals, business and organisations who needed assistance due to coronavirus.
“It provides them with a clear and transparent understanding of options and assistance available if they are experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic,” Mr Rae said.
“Additionally, it gives direction to Council officers, to ensure consideration is given to financial hardship caused by COVID-19.”
The policy applies to all monies owed to Corangamite Shire Council for rate debts (including rates, service charges, municipal charge and fire services levy) and non-rate debts (including animal registrations, permits, fees and user charges).
It will lapse is if not reviewed by 30 November 2020.
Mr Rae said the policy was also aimed at ensuring the sustainability of Council services.
The COVID-19 Financial Hardship Policy can be found here and ratepayers can apply for assistance here. Visit Council’s website of call 5593 7100 for more information on how to apply.
