Work begins this month on the highly-anticipated multi-storey car park at Hughes Street, Cabramatta.

The new 220-space car park at the corner of Hughes Street and Dutton Lane will connect to the existing multi-storey car park with access to a new lift and pedestrian connection to the existing Dutton Plaza lifts.

The existing Hughes Street car park will close from 21 May 2020 to allow construction to take place. Alternative car parking is available in the Dutton Lane, John Street, Hill Street and Fisher Street car parks.

Temporary changes will be made to traffic flow in Dutton Lane. All drivers using the car parks or the Dutton Lane loop will be able to exit onto Hughes Street between 11am and 3pm. Drivers will be required to exit onto Hill Street at all other times.

There will also be changes to traffic flow within the Dutton Lane car parks. Motorists are asked to follow all signage and the direction of staff. Signage will be displayed throughout the car park and Dutton Lane advising motorists of the changes.

The new car park will include bicycle and motorcycle parking in addition to the car parking, bringing the total number of parking spaces in the Dutton Lane precinct to 992. The car park will feature rainwater harvesting and solar energy collection, motorcycle and bicycle parking, and electric car charging bays.

The new car park and adjoining car parks will receive an eye-pleasing façade, with tasteful coloured panels and bamboo planters adding to the vibrancy of the Cabramatta town centre.

Improvements to the information signs are planned with advice for motorists on available parking brought forward to the Hughes Street frontage for the convenience of drivers.

“This new car park is a big win for shoppers, businesses and local residents,” Mayor Carbone said.

“They have all told us that they want convenient access to parking in the Cabramatta town centre so they can get on with their daily lives with minimal fuss.

“Council is committed to supporting local businesses and our vibrant town centre. This car park will make it easier for people to park and shop in the town centre.

“With more than 1,300 off-street car parking spaces provided by Council in the Cabramatta town centre, in addition to the 1,600 on-street spaces nearby, Council continues to support the economic health and ongoing vibrancy of the town centre.”

The current Dutton Lane precinct has a parking turnover of 1.1 million per year. With the addition of this new car park, Council expects to provide up to an additional 350,000 parking movements per year.

All of the car parks in the Dutton Lane precinct will operate under the same timed and paid system – prices starting at $2 for the first two hours.

This is to encourage steady turnover of parking spaces and ensures all residents shopping in Cabramatta town centre can share in these parking spaces, allowing them to park and do business quickly and conveniently.

The new car park will cost $10 million. This is on top of the $20 million Council recently spent on the development of Dutton Plaza, which includes 275 parking spaces.

The new Hughes Street car park is due for completion in early 2021.
