Environment Advisory Committee to be considered

The Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will consider establishing an Environment Advisory Committee (or similar-focused Committee).
Earlier today, Councillors voted for a report on the establishment of a group to be compiled and presented at a future Planning and Development Committee Meeting.
Planning and Development Committee Chair Councillor Megan O’Hara Sullivan raised the item, calling on Council to consider the need for the new group.
“You only have to look at the extreme weather events we’ve had over the past year or so to know there’s a need for us to focus more on the environment. Having a dedicated Committee focused on this area would reinstate the importance our Council places on these issues,” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said.
“Our environment plays a critical part in our health and well-being. Not only that, it’s a critical driver of our economy. After all, we pride ourselves on being known as the Garden City.
“I hear people in our community begging all levels of government to sit up and take care of our precious environment. They want to have a say about how we protect and value our green spaces, our parks, our community gardens, our water catchment areas and our agricultural land.
“This Committee would be able to advise Council on strategy and planning for the protection and enhancement of our Region’s green infrastructure and living landscapes, matters of local environmental significance, regional sustainability and sustainable urban design, and response to climate change and improving the Region’s climate resilience.
“The Committee could also advise and assist in the preparation of the new Toowoomba Region Planning Scheme and Climate Action Strategy.
“We’ve taken great strides in this area over the past few years and with a new Council having recently formed I believe now is the perfect time to consider the establishment of an Environment Advisory Committee which would be a step in the right direction for this Council.”
