Chirnside Park Master Plan Adopted

Big plans are in store for one of Wyndham’s biggest sporting and open space precincts, Chirnside Park, following the adoption of a master plan which will guide future development of the site over the next decade.

The 10-year plan will result in Council building an undercover spectator viewing area overlooking the oval; new shelters for players, coaches and officials; the conversion of existing hard tennis courts to synthetic grass; the provision of an undercover synthetic green and the redevelopment of the pavilion building at the bowling club; and the widening and realignment of the Werribee River Trail.

There will also be landscaping improvements at Bungies Hole and along the Werribee River, including public art along the Werribee River corridor.

Sports Development portfolio holder Cr Peter Maynard said the master plan cemented Chirnside Park’s reputation as a premier sporting and recreational venue.

“The vision for the Chirnside Park master plan is to upgrade connectivity and access in and around the park, improve the game day experience for football and cricket players and spectators, and celebrate the Werribee River as the backbone of the precinct,” Cr Maynard said.

“Chirnside Park has always been one of the gems in Wyndham’s sporting crown, and this is a continuation of Wyndham City’s investment in this key piece of sporting infrastructure.”

“Most recently, Council completed a $675,000 upgrade of the Chirnside Park oval, including a new, softer playing surface, a new irrigation system and taller state-league AFL goal posts.”

Chirnside Park is home to the Werribee Football Club, Werribee Cricket Club, Werribee Outdoor Pool as well as tennis, lawn bowls, and angling club facilities.

As part of the master plan, Council has endorsed the establishment of a new home base for the Werribee Cricket Club and Werribee Junior Cricket Club at Alfred Road Reserve in Werribee, which will take effect in the next five years.

Cr Maynard said the move would forge closer ties between the two clubs, which are currently based at two different venues.
