Funding for projects to stimulate the local economy will flow to Wollondilly Shire Council thanks to an announcement today from the Australian Government of a new $500 million Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
This program will support Council to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The amount of funding each Council will be eligible to receive is based on population and total road length, with Wollondilly Council set to receive up to $872,000.
Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “On behalf of the community, I want to thank the Australian Government and The Hon. Angus Taylor MP for this funding which will allow us to bring forward priority projects for the community”.
“Local Councils are best placed to lead local economic recovery and we’ll be working hard to make sure this funding will be used to help our community get back on its feet as soon as possible.”
“This is a positive first step and I look forward to further funding announcements from the Australian and NSW Governments that will support Council to get on with the job of rebuilding our local economy”.
The funding is able to be used for local road and community infrastructure projects that deliver direct benefits to the community such as improved accessibility, visual amenity and safety benefits.
Projects need to be delivered by 30 June 2021 so Council will explore all options based on its Capital Works Program and identify priorities that can be delivered within this timeframe.
