Aerodrome solar micro grid proposed

Residents are encouraged to have their say on the proposed leasing of a 12-hectare section of the Kerang Aerodrome for the purpose of the construction, commissioning and operation of a 5MW Solar Micro Grid.

Council is seeking community feedback regarding KIG Energy Pty Ltd’s proposal to develop a Micro Grid, to be located on the south-eastern corner of the Kerang Aerodrome, with submissions accepted up to 5pm on 29 June 2020.

“KIG Energy, in partnership with Swinburne University, have proposed to lease from Council a 12-hectare parcel of unused, unproductive land in the corner of the Kerang Aerodrome paddock for a lease term of 30 years,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“If approved, KIG Energy will construct a small power generation plant that will connect to the broader electricity network. The micro grid can be ‘off the grid’ and produce power through renewable energy which can then be on sold to the local community.”

All costs associated with building and constructing the Micro Grid facility will be the responsibility of KIG Energy Pty Ltd, as will be their obligation to rehabilitate the land to its original state at the end of the lease term.

“This proposal adheres to two objectives of the Gannawarra Shire Council Plan 2017-2021, specifically ‘create business opportunities to increase Council’s revenue’ and ‘support and advocate for sustainable and renewable energy industries within the Shire’,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“All submissions received will be considered when this lease proposal is assessed at the July Ordinary meeting of Council.”

Submissions will be accepted in writing via email to [email protected] or by post to PO Box 287, Kerang VIC 3579.
