When the theme for National Reconciliation Week (NRW), In This Together, was announced in January this year, no one could have predicted how relevant it would be.
National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June, and is a week acknowledged around Australia as a time for all people to reflect on and commit to building mutual respect and understanding.
The dates for National Reconciliation Week also commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the 1967 Referendum acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the High Court Mabo decision.
Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, said it was a time for everyone in the community to stop and be consciously aware of acknowledging traditional owners and committing to moving forward together.
“On the first day of National Reconciliation Week, take the time to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land that you are on, wherever you are.
“In the Byron Shire we especially acknowledge the Arakwal people, the Minjungbal people and the Widjabul people of the Bundjalung Nation, and pay our respects to elders past and present.
Rob Appo, Council’s Project Officer, Cultural and Social Planning, said NRW is a time for everyone to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.
“It’s an opportunity to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia,” Mr Appo said.
