National Reconciliation Week (NRW) starts today with the theme In this together.
Physical distancing has impacted on the ability to hold local events to mark the week. However, a national program is being presented online by Reconciliation Australia.
Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds encouraged the Hobart community to tune in.
“We can’t come together physically as a community right now to acknowledge this very important week. But we can still be involved from our own homes,” Cr Reynolds said.
A series of events, including a panel discussion reflecting on the 20th anniversary of the Reconciliation Bridge Walks, a concert hosted by Christine Anu, and film screenings are available via online and radio platforms.
“The theme In this together represents the joint role we all play as Australians in the ongoing process of reconciliation,” Cr Reynolds said. “We can all help create a better understanding of the history and culture of Australia’s first people.”
The City of Hobart launched its Aboriginal Commitment and Action Plan 2020-22 (ACAP) earlier this year, outlining actions for the City to deliver over the next two years.
Objectives are based around building relationships, raising the profile of Aboriginal people, heritage and culture across the city and building a culturally safe workplace.
“The role of our Action Plan is to acknowledge the truth of our history and work collaboratively with Aboriginal people into the future,” Cr Reynolds said.
“On a practical level, it supports City employees to improve their understanding and processes in this area and sets achievable objectives for our organisation.”
