Drivers will soon be able to find a car parking space in Werribee’s City Centre faster than ever before thanks to new Smart Parking technology that will improve the parking experience.
The technology, which uses underground vehicle detection sensors to determine, in real time, the occupancy of a parking space, will link up to a wayfinding app that can help drivers find a parking space without having to cruise around unnecessarily, therefore reducing traffic.
Sensors will be installed across more than 2000 individual parking bays in the Werribee City Centre and surrounds in coming weeks.
Wyndham City’s Smart Cities portfolio holder, Cr Aaron An, said the app – which will be available on both Apple and Android smartphones – will allow drivers to see where available parking is using the in-built Google Map function and will verbally direct people to spaces.
“It will provide drivers with a more pleasant experience in the Werribee City Centre, enabling people to spend less time searching for car parks and more time visiting Werribee’s terrific restaurants, cafes and stores,” Cr An said.
“This is particularly important as businesses get back to normal trading as COVID-19 restrictions are progressively lifted.”
The Smart Parking technology supports the Werribee City Centre Parking Strategy 2019 and is part of Council’s wider vision for Wyndham to become a Smart City, using technology and data to inform service and infrastructure provision.
Cr An said Smart Parking will also provide Wyndham City with crucial data about car parking, ensuring Council is delivering fit-for-purpose parking that aligns with the needs of visitors and businesses.
“This is just one of the ways Council is actively working towards improving car parking availability in and around the Werribee City Centre,” Cr An said.
“Council is also planning for and delivering an additional 1,375 car parks through catalyst site developments in the Werribee City Centre.”
“This will consist of 467 new public parking spaces and 904 private parking spaces for new businesses and households.”
“Council also recently extended the time limit on a number of parking spaces in the Werribee City Centre from one hour to two.”
