Community sport is returning to reserves across Wyndham, but with strict guidelines in place to ensure the health and wellbeing of our local community.

Wyndham City Sports Development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said that now State Government was easing restrictions, many Wyndham clubs and teams were keen to get out and start playing and training at our outdoor facilities.

“Our sport and recreation team at Council have been busy planning a process that allows community sporting groups to return to play safely,” Cr Maynard said.

“We’ve been working closely with Sport and Recreation Victoria, as well as relevant peak sporting bodies, to come up with a plan that ensures we can get back out on local reserves while remaining safe.”

“All sporting clubs are providing us with their plans that cover hygiene, sign in processes, and social distancing while having fun and getting active.”

“Clubs are being provided with information on how to clean the toilet facilities adequately, all training drills must be modified to ensure no contact is made between participants, and if there are more than 10 people in a team – that whole team cannot train together.”

“If you’re wondering what the plan is for your local club, get in touch with them to see what’s happening.”

Cr Maynard said that while community sport was returning, access to facilities at sporting grounds remained limited.

“Given we still have restrictions in place, access to pavilions, indoor social spaces, change rooms, showers and other internal spaces is not permitted, as per direction from the State Government.”

Cr Maynard said it’s not just sporting clubs returning, with personal trainers also able to resume training at local reserves, free of charge.

“We’re asking local personal trainers and casual hirers to submit a plan for safe return, which is available on our website.”

“We know that remaining physically active is important – and small fitness businesses have not been able to operate. This is a great step forward for the health and wellbeing of our community.”
