Physical distancing doesn’t mean the fun has to end – with Wyndham City embracing local technology to continue offering a range of services and programs to families with young children.
Wyndham City’s Family Friendly City Portfolio Holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said playgroup is one of the many programs continuing through the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Playgroup is something we all know and love – I know it’s something my son Gus and I looked forward to in his younger years,” Cr Shaw said.
“While we can’t deliver the program the way we once did, we’re continuing to offer playgroup remotely – using video chat program Microsoft Teams to connect with families.”
“This is an important program that not only increases confidence in parents and is fun for the little ones – but it’s also known to have a positive impact on a child’s learning and development in their earlier years.”
“Playgroup is also a great way for parents to continue connections with other members of the community, build links, and be connected with other local services.”
“The new, web-based groups run for up to 40 minutes a session, and during this period, our friendly staff check in with both parents and children, offer some fun activities, sing a song, and even enjoy story time.”
Cr Shaw said another great initiative coming out of the Child and Family team at Council was a range of content being developed online.
“If you haven’t already, I’d encourage anyone with a little one to check out the Wyndham Together website,” Cr Shaw said.
“This fantastic website features weekly playtime videos, links to low-cost play ideas, art and craft ideas, and much more.”
“This gives families the opportunity to access established, reputable online resources that demonstrate that play does not need to be expensive, and you can have a great time with simple materials found around the home.”
