Cricket and AFL matches could be played under lights at Griffiths Park from next year after Council endorsed a multi-million dollar lighting upgrade for the Manunda sporting complex.
The two Griffiths Park ovals are the home of the Cairns Cricket Association, United Cricket Club, Norths Cricket Club and Cairns Saints AFL.
As part of the Griffiths Park Strategic Plan, field 1 (adjacent to Sportsworld) will be installed with lighting suitable to hold high-level cricket matches at night, and providing additional training and match time for AFL and other community sporting organisations.
The $2.27 million upgrade will involve the erection of four new light towers, about 41 metres in height, to provide 500 lux lighting for the infield and 300 lux to the outfield. As part of the works, the existing lighting will be removed.
Cairns construction company Haz-Elec Industries Pty Ltd has been awarded the $1.7 million contact for the lighting upgrade, which is to be completed at the end of March 2021.
The Griffiths Park Strategic Plan that also includes improved access road, car parking, plaza, cricket practice wickets and shed, landscaping and connection pathways, which will be undertaken next year.
The Queensland Government provided $1 million dollars to Council to upgrade lighting and construct pathways, activity spaces and parking to support multi-sport and active recreation at Griffiths Park to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.
